Oppo, school me on some decently powered but affordable impact wrenches. I’m replacing a CV axle on the Subaru tomorrow to resolve my torn boot and got to thinking about picking up an impact wrench. But this is something I am sure some of you have opinions on so I wanted to get some thoughts.

What is your favorite impact wrench out there right now? I already have a lightweight impact for buzzing bolts on/off and fitting into tight spaces. That has been a pretty dependable Ryobi tool that was a great purchase. But I want something that will compete with/exceed an air impact for the bigger jobs.

Budget is probably in the 200-300 range but im open to any options out there that will serve me as a parking lot hobbyist.

Bought a Milwaukee M18 Fuel about a year ago that looks extremely similar to that one. Done a great job with everything I’ve asked of it, including loosening a ton of lightly rusted bolts from my Wrangler’s suspension components. Battery has held up really well; would totally recommend for the easy/intermediate maintenance work I do. It is a bit bulky, so sometimes can be hard to get into tight spaces, but bought a basic joint socket  adapter that definitely helps with that.

D you have any other battery powered tools? If so stick with that same brand

I have the Dewalt 20v 1/2" impact. I think its the Max XR that has 700ftlbs of torque and 1200ftlbs of breakaway torque. I’ve been quite happy with it. It’s been able to break away anything I’ve put it on. I primarily use it to switch out my wheels at au tocross but it’s become a regular ue iem. This  was the first tool I bought that I would normally use my compressor for and I have added a few more tools since.

I personally own the Harbor Freight Earthquake XT 1/2" , and have used a fair amount a Milwaukee M18 1/2" as well.

Milwaukee hits a fair bit harder, but the HF is a surprisingly good tool. Biggest perk of the Milwaukee is the biggest scam in the tool industry, the battery ecosystem and how many tools can run off those batteries. Milwaukee also has speed selection and some other stuff.

Either should have no issue breaking axle nuts loose; the Milwaukee was purchased almost specifically for those for our work.

I have the Ryobi 1/2 impact and it’ll take everything off that doesn’t require heat or a 4' breaker bar to defeat.

Doesn’t suck down a ton of battery and it’s pretty cheap, especially if you already have a Ryobi tiny impact and charger.  I’ve had it almost 2 years and it gets fairly steady usage.

I always buy Makita and they never break, I still have three generations working. I like the new ones, they are smaller and more powerful than before. I get new ones for space since I have to move my stuff in pelican cases. I already had them but AvE on youtube says they have the best quality and batteries. I drag my Makita stuff to all the shows I work on, my impact turned the Craftsman backwards when we double hit a stuck truss bolt. My new one has all kinds of setting so you don’t break things, they never had that before. I guess you want the bigger one.

I have the regular 20V Max 1/2" which is 400ft/lb, and it’s a bit of beast.

20v dewalt Max xr. much chooch. The forward/reverse button could use a heavier detent, and the socket detent could be a little less stiff, but with the torque involved makes sense why its stiff. LED is nice feature.

Would second if you already have a brand battery to maybe stick with that.

M ilwaukee is the strongest and longest lasting impacts. Seen them out perform Snap-on versions

Dewalt is decent rivals snap-on but non- XR versions i question durability.

Earthquake haven’t seen much bad but haven’t ever used one. One problem that the earthquake brand has low number of tools and unique batteries

Get a DeWalt or a Milwaukee.  Whichever one you either like better, get a better deal on, or if you have one of their battery sets already.

I bought a Ryobi 1/2" kit (P261, which I think is what you linked, plus a 4AH battery and charger) this spring (for $100, which seems like a good price), and it was super helpful doing my shocks/struts, though it couldn’t budge two of the lower strut mount bolts (which seemed to be on way tighter than spec). Didn’t get the sense that it really compared in power to an air impact, but it’s definitely handy.

It’s only rated at 300# and it puts that out reliably it feels like. The only thing I’ve had it not budge recently were the wheel bolts on my TDI (never been off by me) and whoever put them on gave it all the ugga duggas! My 220# ass with all my weight standing on a ratchet wouldn’t budge it either and required a damn 4' breaker bar.

It doesn’t have quite the power of a big air gun and giant compressor and I wish Ryobi made a bigger one in the 500# plus range but it does nicely for what I need of it.

Yeah, for my strut bolts, I got one off with the dubious choice of using my jack to lift my breaker bar. Unfortunately when I tried that on the other, I couldn’t get as good positioning and just messed up the nut instead. Someone put those things way, way tighter than spec.

Usually when my impact won’t break loose a bolt I’ll to a 5# sledge wailing on a breaker bar and that usually makes her let loose which usually doesn’t cause too much carnage.

I have one of those torque multipliers but the couple times I’ve tried using it o n a bolt that was still stuck with other methods I just broke the bolt with it.

Yeah I'm concerned about it being redundant with my other ryobi impact. Sure, it's definitely a better tool than the one I have which only outputs around 100ftlb at best. And it would be nice since I already have the charger and a couple batteries. But I want that "will get ANYTHING off" sort of tool. It's why I'm leaning towards the Milwaukee/Mikita/Dewalt offerings. It's a shame Ryobi doesn't make a higher powered one, I'd absolutely go for that.

If only ryobi made something with more than 300ftlbs. I don't think that's enough to avoid needing air stuff.

I have the one you pictured. It is a beast. 1400ft/lb of removing force. I bought it while working on a very rusty old BMW a few years back and couldn’t get an axle nut off with my Makita impact. The Milwaukee didn’t even flinch, the nut came off instantly.

I have DeWalt stuff for the garage/outdoor/serious work , but I have a few of the mini Milwaukee stuff that looks like Star Trek phasers for the inside of the house.

I did not know that.

Black and Decker has owned DeWalt for 30ish years. At first they made more or less the same tools, in different colors. Over the years, DeWalt tools have gotten better and better, while Black and Decker got super-crappy.

Milwaukee has always made great stuff.  Ryobi has always made OK stuff.  They’re both remarkable consistent brands.  Anything Milwaukee will be good, and anything Ryobi will be fine.

it’s probably not the answer to the question you asked, since it’s corded, but the Premium Line Harbor Freight CORDED unit is under $100— and I’ve pounded  corroded high-torque fasteners off everything from a 1 Ton Truck to my Silverado and Suburbans with it. 1/2" drive, up to 1000 ft lbs.

No cordless unit can do what these will do.  If you have an outlet nearby.

Even Trailer Wheel change-outs are a breeze with the Bauer. Best $100 I ever spent. It’s always on station next to the hangar door with enough cord to do all four wheels from one spot.

But, no, I don’t actually believe 1000 ft-pounds, but it’s immensely more effective than my good Ryobi cordless.

I’m on team Rid gid here. I bought their last model with a brush motor for ab out $125 before they stopped making them. The thing has worked for me for the last 4 years. Plus, all of their tools are covered in a lifetime warranty. I do not know the specs off hand, but I have never struggled to free up anything I’ve worked on, and I live in the rust belt.
